Tom Byrne, Vice President of Engineering
Tom is responsible for providing technical support for the designs of Orion's bearing products. His duties include development of new power-saving journal bearings, implementation of new bearing performance-predicting programs, and advising customers on optimum bearing designs. He has provided the industry with consulting, troubleshooting, and upgrading of bearings for many types of equipment. Tom has been with Orion since 1978 and has served in a variety of positions in the Engineering Department. Prior to Orion, Tom worked at Falk Corporation as a design engineer in gearing. He received his BS in Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Wisconsin, and holds several patents for bearing designs. Tom is a member of ASME.
Dr. James Ball, Senior Engineer - Technical Development
Dr. Ball has spent more than a quarter century in the industrial bearing industry. His experience prior to joining Orion includes product development, fluid film bearings and rolling element bearings at the Allis Chalmers Advanced Technology Center, Torrington Bearing Company and Bucyrus-Erie Company. At Orion, his responsibilities include thrust bearing design and applications. Dr. Ball is a member of ASME, STLE and the Vibration Institute. He holds several patents and has authored multiple technical papers on bearings, seals, pumps, tribology, machinery dynamics and vibrations. He received his B.S.M.E, M.S.M.E and Ph.D. in Vibration Analysis and Technical Design from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
Bruce Kegley, Manager of Drafting
Bruce supervises the production of new bearing drawings and material lists, implementation of CAD software, and integration with CAM systems. His areas of expertise include optimizing designs for cost effectiveness. Bruce has been involved in the design of pump, turbine, compressor, motor, generator, and ship bearings. He has been with Orion Corporation since 1972. Prior to joining Orion Bruce worked in design at Dostel & Lowey and Louis Allis.
Tom Stietz, Design Engineer
Tom's responsibilities include bearing design and matching performance to customer specifications. His areas of specialty are tilt pad journal bearings and sleeve bearings. Additional responsibilities include material specifications and selections, bearing testing, and process improvement. He has consulted with the industry to find innovative methods to reduce bearing pad temperatures. He joined the Orion Engineering Department in 1999. He previously worked as a design engineer at Falk Corporation where his responsibilities included gear drive design and testing. Tom received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from University of Wisconsin at Platteville.
Gary Wegner, Vice President of Sales
Gary directs the activities of the Sales and Marketing Departments. His areas of expertise include bearings for power generation and centrifugal compressors. During Gary's tenure, Orion has expanded its reputation from a supplier of tilt pad bearings for compressors to being recognized as a world-class designer and manufacturer of power generation bearings. Gary has provided the industry with solutions to difficult bearing applications since he joined Orion in 1979. Prior to Orion, Gary worked at Allis Chalmers, and Carrier Air Conditioning in Field Engineering and Service Engineering, specializing in centrifugal compressors and turbines. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and holds several patents in bearing design.
Cal Cummings, Sales Manager
Cal is responsible for worldwide sales of bearing products. He consulted with the industry to solve vibration problems, upgrade bearing designs and minimize bearing temperatures in compressors and gears. He has been instrumental in the implementation of production systems to increase speed of bearing fulfillment and quotations. Cal has served Orion in a variety of sales positions since 1994. Prior to Orion Cal was an application engineer at Falk Corporation specializing in marine gearing. He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Mike Leonard, Sales Engineer
Mike is responsible for sales of bearings for industrial and military use. He has been involved in the application of special coatings and bearing materials for military and nuclear applications as well as babbitt bearings for turbines and compressors. He has worked at Orion Corporation since 1998. Prior to Orion, Mike was a sales engineer in the bearing industry and at Young Radiator. He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
Hans Melgaard, Sales Engineer
Hans handles sales of bearings for industrial use and specialized machining for military applications. He has consulted with European industries, and aided in development of specialized products to meet their needs. Hans joined Orion in 2001. Prior to that he held positions as a sales engineer and project engineer at GFG Corporation, a manufacturer of specialty equipment for the steel industry. He received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Madison.
